God Often Goes to Work When a Country Is Humbled and Broken

My Precious Friends,

When I entered the ministry over 45 years ago, the word " Argentina” often had a negative ring to many people. This beautiful country in South America had been a haven for nazis running for their lives following World War II. (Of course, the USA also quietly welcomed some nazis who would prove "useful” in our new war against Russia and communism.) Too many Argentinians were also quite arrogant (they told me this themselves) because they were rich, educated and sophisticated.

Then dictatorships and military coups took their toll in Argentina. Hundreds of people disappeared ("los desaparecidos”)—dropped with weights into ocean depths—never to be seen again. Anti-Semitism flourished. The economy crumbled and Argentinians became just another poor Latin American country.

But wait! When a country is humbled and its people broken, God often goes to work. Now church delegations from America are traveling to Argentinato see first-hand the spiritual revolution taking place and to be encouraged.

Sometimes I find it hard to believe that God has made me a part of this divine outpouring of His Spirit. A movement with some 1,000 churches has welcomed me with open arms. I have just returned from Argentina where I spoke every night and felt the heart of Jesus working in me. Hundreds of lives—most of them young people—virtually ran to the front of the great auditorium to give their lives to God. One beautiful girl came to me in tears. "I hated Americans”, she said, "because an American caused me great pain. Please forgive me. I have learned not to judge a country by the sins of one person.”

After the last great meeting, it was time to celebrate. Those masses of young people began weeping and leaping like King David must have done so long ago. I joined them, swallowed up in their sheer numbers and holy exuberance. They want to reach out to Israel. They want to reach the world. If this was a little taste of heaven—WOW!!

Amazing, isn’t it? Politicians fall in disgrace. Suicide bombers terrify masses. Wars and suffering fill the planet. But in the midst of it all, God is bringing a harvest!

Jesus said many would come in His name and deceive the hearts of the simple, sinful and proud. Eastern mysticism and meditation is a big thing in the gullible West. And one day a “world leader” will appear on the scene with the persuasion of a god and the heart of a devil. Jesus warns His children to know the Scriptures, live in obedience to the Father’s will, and stay alert to the signs of the times.
They laugh no more. Now God’s description of how He will destroy the old earth and create a new one makes perfect sense. The splitting of the atom turned many skeptics into believers. After all, look what man himself is capable of doing with the atom and hydrogen bombs. Now the fear is that nuclear weapons are being placed in the hands of madmen who wish to annihilate their enemies.
God has blessed man with incredible genius. We stand in awe as we watch men and women in a room full of computers and high-tech instruments guiding and landing spacecraft on distant planets. At that moment, we appear invincible. But then a mammoth tornado comes—or a terrifying hurricane—or rains that flood whole regions and never listen to our shouts to “Stop!”—or the shake that removes from under our feet any confidence or pride we carry, and leaves us numb with hardly enough breath to even utter the paralyzing word “EARTHQUAKE!”. And man is helpless in the face of it all!
