Lesson22 (Part 2)
INTRODUCTION
When I was new in the ministry, I was told by some older saints, “Don’t spend much time in the Old Testament. The New Testament is for us today.” I was also discouraged from preaching any messages from the Old Testament. Those saints were well-meaning but they were deceived. I was also deceived for accepting their counsel.
The Old Testament takes in two thirds of our Bible. The Old Testament Scriptures were the only Scriptures used by Jesus and the early disciples. No New Testament had yet been written! We were warned by Paul to learn from the examples of the Old Testament. Those examples show us winners (those who pleased God) and losers (those who failed to please God). We will eventually study all the winners and losers of the Old Testament. For now, we will study the first five books of Moses called in Hebrew, “The Torah”. When we complete The book of Deuteronomy we will go to other practical subjects before we return to study further examples in the Old Testament. Today’s lesson will complete the fourth book of the Torah—the book of Numbers.

(Then read the whole chapter) Balaam is an example that once God speaks, He counts as sin any attempt or hope we have that He might change His mind. (Here is a pitiful example of a covetous heart not able to see the greater spiritual riches of God—see II Peter 2:15,16. God applies pressure three times by means of Balaam’s donkey and yet Balaam tried to go through the road blocks—an example of how a man moves from inward lust to the outward fall (James 1:13-15). |

Example—Those who claim Christ and yet compromise with sin will fall under the same judgment as the Israelites who embraced the sins of their evil neighbors and had to share God’s wrath directed at the pagans and their sins. | Jesus said many would come in His name and deceive the hearts of the simple, sinful and proud. Eastern mysticism and meditation is a big thing in the gullible West. And one day a “world leader” will appear on the scene with the persuasion of a god and the heart of a devil. Jesus warns His children to know the Scriptures, live in obedience to the Father’s will, and stay alert to the signs of the times. They laugh no more. Now God’s description of how He will destroy the old earth and create a
new one makes perfect sense. The splitting of the atom turned many skeptics into believers.
After all, look what man himself is capable of doing with the atom and hydrogen bombs. Now
the fear is that nuclear weapons are being placed in the hands of madmen who wish to annihilate
their enemies. God has blessed man with incredible genius. We stand in awe as we watch men and women in a room full of computers and high-tech instruments guiding and landing spacecraft on distant planets. At that moment, we appear invincible. But then a mammoth tornado comes—or a terrifying hurricane—or rains that flood whole regions and never listen to our shouts to “Stop!”—or the shake that removes from under our feet any confidence or pride we carry, and leaves us numb with hardly enough breath to even utter the paralyzing word “EARTHQUAKE!”. And man is helpless in the face of it all! |
