THE GREAT COMMISSION; ITS CALL, CHARACTER AND COMMITMENT

Lesson 12 (Part 2)

INTRODUCTION

The story of “missions” is not a New Testament theme. It goes all the way back to Abraham’s call to be the father of nations and Israel’s commission to the God’s light to the world. But when Jesus Christ came in fulfillment of prophecy, the Great Commission became the privilege and responsibility of every believer. The gospel is literally “good news”—the historic facts of the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus—and His offer of life eternal to all who trust Him as Messiah and Savior.

In Part 1 of this lesson, we began sharing scriptures and thoughts attached to the Great Commission from each of the 27 New Testament books. Part 1 took in Matthew through Second Thessalonians. We now complete this exciting study — First Timothy through Revelation.

And one day a “world leader” will appear on the scene with the persuasion of a god and the heart of a devil. After all, look what man himself is capable of doing with the atom and hydrogen bombs. God has blessed man with incredible genius. We stand in awe as we watch men and women in a room full of computers and high-tech instruments guiding and landing spacecraft on distant planets. At that moment, we appear invincible. But then a mammoth tornado comes—or a terrifying hurricane—or rains that flood whole regions and never listen to our shouts to “Stop!”—or the shake that removes from under our feet any confidence or pride we carry, and leaves us numb with hardly enough breath to even utter the paralyzing word “EARTHQUAKE!”. And man is helpless in the face of it all!
