WINNERS AND LOSERS

THE BOOK OF PROVERBS-PART 1

LESSON 65 Part 1

INTRODUCTION

I call the Book of Proverbs the "GET SMART BOOK". It is especially important for young believers to learn and practice the truths taught in these 31 chapters. I like to read one chapter a day for each day of the month.

Most of the advice, warnings and promises were written by King Solomon under the guidance of the Spirit of God. Solomon started out as a winner but his heart turned to lust, rebellion and idol-worshipping wives. How sad! Let's study this book well and determine to walk in obedience to God by the power of the Holy Spirit-one day-one moment-at a time.

PROVERBS

1:20, 23, 33                   Example-Why "I'll repent tomorrow" is often too late.

2:1-5                             Example-Criteria for living in the reverential fear of God-and the

benefits gained (see verses' 12, 16).

3:5-8                             Example-Recipe for remaining free from self-deception.

SIN'S FINAL ADDRESS

5:1-13                          Example-The final address of lust is "death and hell street".

5:15-19                        Example-The glory of God-given passion that is reserved for the
                                   marriage bed.

6:16-19                        Example-The Lord's example of what to hate.

7: (all)                          Example-The man who didn't "flee youthful lusts"
                                   (2 Timothy 2:22).
8:13, 17-19, 30, 34        Example-To walk with Jesus ("Wisdom") is to delight the Father-and
                                   delight in Him.

A TONGUE UNDER CONTROL

10:11, 19-21                Example-When God controls the tongue (See James 3:1, 2).

10:23                          Example-A man of God's number one priority-practicing
                                  righteousness.
13:19                          Example-The soul's sweetest experience-successful resisting of
                                  temptation.

14:14                          Example-The backslider's worst nightmare is to find himself filled only

with himself instead of being filled with God.

A BAD ODOR

20:6; 27:2                     Example-The bad odor of self-praise.

23:29-35                       Example-The terrible lesson of the drunkard.

24:10-12                       Example-God leaves no escape to His call for each of us to
                                   be our brother's keeper.
31:10-31                       Example-God's definition of a wonderful wife (see 19:14 and
                                    compare with 19:13; 21:9, 19; 25:24; 27:15, 16).

Jesus said many would come in His name and deceive the hearts of the simple, sinful and proud. Eastern mysticism and meditation is a big thing in the gullible West. And one day a “world leader” will appear on the scene with the persuasion of a god and the heart of a devil. Jesus warns His children to know the Scriptures, live in obedience to the Father’s will, and stay alert to the signs of the times.
They laugh no more. Now God’s description of how He will destroy the old earth and create a new one makes perfect sense. The splitting of the atom turned many skeptics into believers. After all, look what man himself is capable of doing with the atom and hydrogen bombs. Now the fear is that nuclear weapons are being placed in the hands of madmen who wish to annihilate their enemies.
God has blessed man with incredible genius. We stand in awe as we watch men and women in a room full of computers and high-tech instruments guiding and landing spacecraft on distant planets. At that moment, we appear invincible. But then a mammoth tornado comes—or a terrifying hurricane—or rains that flood whole regions and never listen to our shouts to “Stop!”—or the shake that removes from under our feet any confidence or pride we carry, and leaves us numb with hardly enough breath to even utter the paralyzing word “EARTHQUAKE!”. And man is helpless in the face of it all!
