BOOK OF ISAIAH (PART 1)
LESSON 70 Part 1
INTRODUCTION
Let's begin the new year by going back to our Old Testament studies of what made people winners with God and what made others tragic losers. We have arrived at Isaiah-the first of the four major prophets. If you missed the previous studies, you will find all of them on our web-site at: www.shalomworldwide.org(Genesis through Song of Solomon).
There were no "New Testament Scriptures" during Jesus' earthly ministry. The record of the gospels, the epistles, and the Revelation, would come later. The "Scriptures" referred to by Jesus and the apostles were the First Testament Hebrew Scriptures-what Christians call the "Old Testament."
Jesus constantly referred to Himself as fulfilling those Scriptures-and the foundation of the Church was laid on the bedrock of "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." (2 Timothy 3:16, 17)
In the New Testament, followers of Jesus Christ are warned (1 Corinthians 10: 6, 11), to study and grasp the lessons and examples found throughout the first thirty-nine books of the Hebrew Scriptures. I've taken that admonition seriously-as you are about to discover in our travels through the major prophets-Isaiah through Daniel. Let's look at some more examples of winners and losers. Then let's cry out to God to make us winners who walk in reverence and obedience to Him.
ISAIAH
1:3-7 Example of the condition of the disobedient versus:
1:16-19 An example of the condition of the obedient.
6:5 Isaiah-an example of brokenness.
7:5, 6 Example of the depravity of the human heart-"the Chosen
People" helping to kill other Jews.
CROOKED LEADERS
9:16 Example of crooked leaders leading a people astray.
10:5-12 Example of an arrogant nation (Assyria) facing judgment for its
hatred of Israel.
14:13-15 Example of the heights of pride-and the depths of God's
judgments-(these mysterious scriptures may refer to both the
devil and man).
20:5, 6 Example of God removing Israel's hopes of nations (Egypt and
Ethiopia) serving as saviors (note Israel's reliance on the USA today
and how the Jewish leaders are again trusting mere human
helpers rather than God).
22:10-14 Example of missing God's moment given to repent (a warning to
America?).
23:9 Example of God pouring contempt on national glory when the
Almighty is not acknowledged and sought.
DEAD RELIGION
29:8-24 Example of dead religion, prideful importance, and God turning
the tables to elevate the meek.
30:1-3, 8-11 Example of national rebellion.
31:1-3 Example of Israel foolishly seeking other allies than God.
36:15-18 King of Assyria-an example of the utter stupidity of man in
challenging God.
37:14-20 Hezekiah-an example of sole reliance on God.
