BOOK OF ISAIAH (PART 2)

LESSON 70  Part 2

INTRODUCTION

The book of the great prophet Isaiah is the longest book in the Bible (66 chapters) other than the Book of Psalms. We find many examples-losers and winners-in Isaiah. Let's now complete our Isaiah study as we view the behavior of both individuals and nations.

WRONG USE OF A MIRACLE

38:5; 39:1-8                             Example of Hezekiah using God's miracle to become proud and                                         selfish.

40:12-31                                  Example of God's amazement at Israel's blindness.

45:1-6                                     Cyrus-an example of God touching a pagan heart to
bring about His purposes for Israel.

47:1-11                                   Example of an arrogant nation (Babylon) facing judgment.

CONTROLLED ANGER

48:9-11                                    Example of God's controlled anger in not destroying Israel.

50:4-11                                    Example of that obedient Servant-Jesus-and His
                                               servants.
51: (all)                                    Example of a God of love, a leaderless people, and
judgment of the world for its arrogance against the
                                               Jews.

52:13 thru 53:12                       Example of the perfect Servant and sacrifice.

WHEN "NOBODYS" ARE "SOMEBODYS"

56:1-5                                      Example of "nobodys" (1 Corinthians 1:27) being honored
by God for right choices, versus the example of greedy
                                               leaders being brought down (56:10-12).

58:1-14                                    Specific conditions for God's blessing-"if" and "then."

59:1-15                                    Example of national confusion (USA beware) as a result of
                                               sin.
63:9-19                                    Example of where rebellion leads (see especially verses 10
                                               and 18).

Jesus said many would come in His name and deceive the hearts of the simple, sinful and proud. Eastern mysticism and meditation is a big thing in the gullible West. And one day a “world leader” will appear on the scene with the persuasion of a god and the heart of a devil. Jesus warns His children to know the Scriptures, live in obedience to the Father’s will, and stay alert to the signs of the times.
They laugh no more. Now God’s description of how He will destroy the old earth and create a new one makes perfect sense. The splitting of the atom turned many skeptics into believers. After all, look what man himself is capable of doing with the atom and hydrogen bombs. Now the fear is that nuclear weapons are being placed in the hands of madmen who wish to annihilate their enemies.
God has blessed man with incredible genius. We stand in awe as we watch men and women in a room full of computers and high-tech instruments guiding and landing spacecraft on distant planets. At that moment, we appear invincible. But then a mammoth tornado comes—or a terrifying hurricane—or rains that flood whole regions and never listen to our shouts to “Stop!”—or the shake that removes from under our feet any confidence or pride we carry, and leaves us numb with hardly enough breath to even utter the paralyzing word “EARTHQUAKE!”. And man is helpless in the face of it all!
