BOOK OF JEREMIAH (PART 1)

LESSON 71   Part 1

INTRODUCTION

I love the book of Jeremiah. God gave this prophet of tears a beautiful heart and the most difficult of assignments. The nation of Israel, like America today, had fallen into open sin and rebellion against God. Jeremiah's task was to call them to repentance or else they would face the terrible wrath and judgment of the Creator. Sadly, they mocked the prophet and paid the price.

You will gain many lessons of life in this book of 52 chapters. You will also find incredible promises made to the obedient.

JEREMIAH

1:4-10, 17-19              Jeremiah-an example of an obedient heart in the most difficult

        of assignments.

2:8-13, 19-21,             Example of a sinning nation's false hopes being broken.

26-28, 35-37

3:1-4, 8-25,                 Example of God's broken heart over spiritual adultery.

4:4                               Example of the true meaning of circumcision-that of the heart.

5:1-7, 22-31                Example of loving sin to the point of refusing all correction.

MOCKING GOD

6:8-10, 13-16              Example of mocking God (Gal. 6:7, 8).

8:10-15                        Example of a "peace treaty" without seeking God.

9:23, 24                       Example of what makes a loser or a winner.

14:11-15                      Example of God's judgment on those who use His Name falsely.

15:15-21                      Example of going it alone for the Lord's sake.

PATIENCE UNDER PERSECUTION

17:9, 10                       Example of why to never trust your own heart.

17:15-18                      Example of patience in the midst of mockery and persecution.

19:5-9                          Example of the depravity of sin.

20:7-11                        Example of a love slave to God.

23:7-36                        Example of God's broken heart over perverted spiritual leadership.

JEREMIAH'S ALONENESS

26:2-15                        Jeremiah's total aloneness-an example of Romans 8:31.

27:5-7                          Example of great nations raised up and then destroyed.

28: (all)                        Hananiah-an example of a careless "thus saith the Lord"

                                    when God had not spoken.

29:7-13                       Example of necessary submissiveness when placed by God in the

                                    fires of refining and purging.

30:7-24                       Example of the enduring love of God.

Jesus said many would come in His name and deceive the hearts of the simple, sinful and proud. Eastern mysticism and meditation is a big thing in the gullible West. And one day a “world leader” will appear on the scene with the persuasion of a god and the heart of a devil. Jesus warns His children to know the Scriptures, live in obedience to the Father’s will, and stay alert to the signs of the times.
They laugh no more. Now God’s description of how He will destroy the old earth and create a new one makes perfect sense. The splitting of the atom turned many skeptics into believers. After all, look what man himself is capable of doing with the atom and hydrogen bombs. Now the fear is that nuclear weapons are being placed in the hands of madmen who wish to annihilate their enemies.
God has blessed man with incredible genius. We stand in awe as we watch men and women in a room full of computers and high-tech instruments guiding and landing spacecraft on distant planets. At that moment, we appear invincible. But then a mammoth tornado comes—or a terrifying hurricane—or rains that flood whole regions and never listen to our shouts to “Stop!”—or the shake that removes from under our feet any confidence or pride we carry, and leaves us numb with hardly enough breath to even utter the paralyzing word “EARTHQUAKE!”. And man is helpless in the face of it all!
