Give it Away—How to be Spiritually Rich
By Frank Eiklor

It’s 2015—not 1500 B.C. But wait! Who is that bending over while making bricks from mud and straw? It’s Elijah, pastor of a small flock on the plains of Kenya.

The congregation of farmers and herders is rich in faith and poor in funds.

So Elijah preaches and works—works and preaches.

I met him a few years ago when I went to Kenya. Fellow preacher Bob Hakala and I had some great days giving out the bread of life to the Masai people. They live among lions—and some carry scars from the encounters and close calls.

But what I loved was how many—like Elijah—are faithful to the Lion of Judah.

He and his family love the Lord Jesus—and Elijah is determined to preach Christ even while molding, baking, and selling bricks to keep bread on his family’s table.

He and his people are one of two big reasons I love Kenya. The other reason is that Kenya allowed Israel to land and refuel during the historic rescue of Israelis from Idi Amin and terrorists in Uganda. It’s called the miracle at Entebbe. It’s also why the Israeli people love the Kenyans.

Before leaving the tribe, I had the honor of being made a chief and presented with a “talking stick”—the Masai rod of authority.

To this day, I treasure this symbol of their love.

Well, we’re still in Kenya—thanks to our internet television and St. Paul School by email. And we’re helping Elijah with material blessing so he can spend less time making bricks and more time making disciples.

It will be worth it all when we see Jesus. We can’t take riches with us—but we can send them on ahead by helping the Elijahs of this world.

What a mighty God we serve!

After all, look what man himself is capable of doing with the atom and hydrogen bombs. God has blessed man with incredible genius. We stand in awe as we watch men and women in a room full of computers and high-tech instruments guiding and landing spacecraft on distant planets. At that moment, we appear invincible. But then a mammoth tornado comes—or a terrifying hurricane—or rains that flood whole regions and never listen to our shouts to “Stop!”—or the shake that removes from under our feet any confidence or pride we carry, and leaves us numb with hardly enough breath to even utter the paralyzing word “EARTHQUAKE!”. And man is helpless in the face of it all!
