People - The World's Largest Mission Field
By Frank Eiklor and the Shalom Team
You couldn’t board the plane and go with me to New Hampshire for Easter 2013. If you had, you’d see why I lose my heart there every year I return to minister.
First, there are men of God who thirst for more of Jesus. Among them, Bob Hakala (best buddy and host pastor). Ben Swan (soul brother, who invited me to speak at the all-churches sunrise service to a packed chapel with people lining the walls and 150 more standing for an hour out in the cold. The Holy Spirit brought heaven’s warmth as many stood to commit their lives to Christ.) Paul Somero, whose heart beats like mine for world missions—and many more.
And oh the tears I felt—sometimes of joy—or of heartache—or of wonder. Joy over David, one tough hombre who refused all who sought to bring him to Christ. At the packed 11am Easter service, many stood to surrender their lives to the risen Lord. David was standing behind Pastor Bob—praying out loud with all the others. At our final service that night, in walked rugged David and told Bob, “Well, I’m baaaaack! Something’s going on inside me.”
Tears of joy.
For Jennie, whose loving and sensitive heart was broken over one brother who just died of a heart attack at 56 and two brothers battling cancer. And for Marsha and John who lost their beautiful daughter Zion in a car accident and now struggle with John’s cancer...
Tears of heartache.
For Paulie, Jennie’s brother who we’re praying will be healed of cancer. When he was only four, his three year old brother told him, “I’m going to heaven.” “I’m going with you”, said Paulie. “You can’t come now. Jesus said only I can go,” said the three year old. Shortly after, he fell through a well cover and drowned. Paulie loved Jesus from that time on. I felt heaven all around us as he told the story. I could almost see the angel carrying that little brother home.
Tears of wonder.
On my plane from L.A. to Boston, my words of appreciation touched the flight attendants who kept offering me gifts and thanks. One of them, a young man from Taiwan, said, “I love Jesus. But because of my family, I’m still half Buddhist”. By the end of the flight he was ready to go all the way with Christ.
The mission field is where people are. And people are everywhere. Pray for the names mentioned here. And pray for Shalom and the many other places and faces that are before us. Your prayers give strength. Your financial help keeps us on the front lines across America and the world.
Thanks for caring,
Frank
