On one side can be heard, "Speaking in tongues is of the devil!", while on the other extreme we hear, "Speaking in tongues is the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit." Of course the Holy Spirit is left on the side lines while the debate rages on. However today God's Spirit is shaking up his Church and bringing a new humility and hunger to many in leadership.

Prophecy is one of the great gifts of the Holy Spirit. Various denominations interpret it differently. One side sees it as “forthtelling”—the anointed preaching of the Word of God. My charismatic brethren view it as more “foretelling”—uttering what they believe to be a special word from the Lord to their listeners. I see both sides as “prophetic” and necessary to the growth of the body.

Something good is coming out of something bad. The bad is a world crashing all around us. The good is that many Christians are waking up and realizing that we had better get serious about the things of God. Persecution against serious followers of Jesus is not coming. It’s already here.

Just as suffering has purified Christians in many places of persecution, so it is coming to us. “Lukewarm” will not be tolerated by Christ in coming days (Rev. 3:14-16). Carrying the name “Christian” even while being dead to the life-transforming power of Jesus will come to an end (Revelation 3:2). Where will these changes first occur?
